Discoverer 2

Class overview

Welcome to Discoverer 2. We are an upper Key stage 2 class. Our class teacher is Vicki. Our teaching assistant is Helen (Monday to Thursday) and Jo L (Friday).  Dawn and Louise are our ISAs.

Summer 1:

Discoverer 2’s topic this term has been ‘The Anglo Saxons’. We have really enjoyed learning about how they lived. We have learned how some of our towns have Anglo Saxon meanings and we researched our own towns and cities using the laptops.  We looked at some of their villages and how they were made up. We made Anglo Saxon bread in cookery. This was quite nice when we tasted it. Also as part of our topic we reinacted the Battle of Hastings.

In science we have been learning about plants. We looked at plants through a magnifying glass We made predictions on how plants grow in different conditions. When we reviewed our plants, we learned that plants need water and sunlight to survive. We studied the life cycle of a plant. When we learned about seed dispersal when found out that seed travel in different ways.

This term we have being learning about the importance of bees. We researched them on the laptops. We went on a Bee walk around the school field looking to see how many there were. We will go on another walk before we break up for the summer to record if there will be more or less bees about. At the end of term we celebrated World Bee Day. We used the laptops to research the different types of bee.

In English we have been reading the Clarice Bean books by Lauren Child. We have read about her family and what happened when something extraordinary happens. We practiced planning a story, created our own family tree to then write a story about our family in an ordinary situation. Then continued with what happened when something unusual happens.

Also, in English we have been learning to use speech in our writing, using commas correctly and writing list sentences.

In maths we have been learning about fractions. We have learned how to add and subtract them and how to create a whole fraction. We have used counters to make parts of a fraction too.

As a special treat for May Day, we had a group of Morris dancers come into school. They were very good and some of us enjoyed dancing with them.

In PE we have taken part in our sports day. This was very exciting and a hot day. We all took part and had lots of fun.
