Sherbrook Curriculum

At Sherbrook Primary School we have designed our curriculum to engage and meet the needs of all of our pupils. Through a carefully designed curriculum, prior learning and individual Education, Health and Care Plan outcomes we maximise opportunities to develop pupil’s communication and language skills, personal and social development and ultimately their independence.

Each curriculum lead has redeveloped and redesigned their curriculum content and structure to ensure it is well sequenced and builds upon pupil’s prior learning. Long term plans and curriculum structure were designed with Wiliam’s (2013) key principles in mind.

• Balanced, each subject promotes learning in all phases and subject areas.

• Coherent, explicit connections and links between different subjects and experienced encountered.

• Appropriate, the curriculum is demands are matched to children’s current level with their SEN needs in mind.

• Focused, big ideas and key concepts are identified and matched to ILPs.

• Relevant, each topic connects the outcomes of the curriculum to the children.

Our pre-formal curriculum (Explorers) is aimed at learners working in our EYFS and complex needs department. The curriculum is aimed at learners who require additional support with communication, sensory integration and cognition. This curriculum has been developed using the Birth to Five matters document and the Early Years Framework.

Pupils following our Semi-Formal and Formal Curriculum (Adventurers and Discoverers) learn best when learning is related to their own experience. Some may learn through play others will learn more effectively through functional activities. Pupils have the opportunity for discrete Maths and English lessons. Other subjects; science, art, geography and history are covered through topic lessons. Our topic based approached ensures that our curriculum is covered in a coherent and relevant way. This curriculum has been designed using the National Curriculum and has been heavily adapted to ensure that the learning is personalised to meet the needs of our pupils.
