Teaching RSHE at Sherbrook

At Sherbrook Primary School RSHE education is of the utmost importance in developing our pupils’ knowledge and skills to keep themselves healthy and safe and prepare them for adult life.  Our curriculum determines and underpins the whole ethos of our school, it brings together citizenship with personal well-being, whilst promoting fundamental British values.  Although RSHE is taught through discreet lessons, it also underpins all activities, assemblies, educational visits and extra-curricular clubs.  By teaching pupils to stay safe and healthy, and by building self-esteem, resilience and empathy, our children can tackle barriers to learning, raise their aspirations, and improve their life chances. It is intended that we will offer a cohesive whole-school approach delivered in an age appropriate way, which enables our children to become healthy, independent and responsible members of society.

As a school, we aim to:

  • Ensure our children know and understand what constitutes a healthy lifestyle;
  • Make children aware of how to stay safe, including online;
  • Ensure pupils know what a healthy relationship is;
  • Help pupils develop their resilience, perseverance and self-esteem;
  • Develop mindfulness which will help increase concentration, emotional awareness and focus;
  • Ensure our pupils become active members of their community.

We follow the Jigsaw programme and ensure it is taught the through the mindful approach to RSHE through a progressive and spiral scheme of learning. There are 6 pieces that are taught over a 2 year rolling programme. This ensures learning from previous years is revisited and extended, adding new concepts, knowledge and skills, year on year in age appropriate way.

Being me in my World - covers a wide range of topics, including a sense of belonging, welcoming others and being part of a community - school, village, local area, national and global.

Celebrating Difference - focuses in similarities and differences and teaches about diversity, such as disability, racism, power, friendships and conflict.  Children learn to accept everyone's right to 'difference'.  We also learn about the concept of bullying - what it is and what is isn't, including cyber and homophobic bullying.

Dreams and Goals - encourages children to think about their hopes and dreams, their goals for success, what personal strengths are and how to overcome challenges. Children learn about experiencing and managing feelings of pride, ambition, disappointment, success and they have the opportunity to share their aspirations and their dreams for the world.

Healthy Me - covers physical health (eating, activity, rest & relaxation, drugs, alcohol, keeping safe) and also has a strong focus on mental health and emotional literacy throughout, empowering children to be aware of their own thoughts and feelings and know how to manage and regulate these.

Relationships - has a wide focus looking at diverse topics such as families, friendships, pets & animals, love & loss. A vital part of this unit is about safeguarding and keeping children safe; this links to cyber safety and social networking, as well as attraction and assertiveness. Children will learn how to deal with conflict, their own strengths and self-esteem.  They will have the chance to explore roles and responsibilities in families and to learn about stereotypes.  All lessons are delivered in an age appropriate way.

Changing Me- deals with changes of many types from growing from young to old, becoming a teenager, assertiveness, self-respect and safeguarding.  Self and body image, puberty, attraction and accepting change are diverse subjects for children to explore.  Life cycles and how babies are made and grow are treated sensitively and are designed to meet children's needs.  All year groups learn about how people and bodies change.
